Proposition 1

It has a reassuring name.

Take a Second Look.

The “Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act” is on your ballot. Read what it would actually change in Idaho law — then decide.

What Prop 1 would actually do

It goes well beyond reasonable exceptions

Prop 1 writes a right to abortion “up to fetal viability” into Idaho law — long past the point a baby can feel pain.

It quietly redefines “viability”

Idaho law has understood fetal viability as roughly 20 to 24 weeks. Prop 1 redefines it as a “significant likelihood of sustained survival … without extraordinary medical measures,” which would authorize late-term abortions into the seventh or eighth month.

It overrides parental consent

Prop 1 creates the right for “every person” regardless of age. Abortion would become the only procedure performed on a minor girl without her parents’ permission.

It lets non-doctors perform abortions

Prop 1 requires only consultation with a “health care provider,” defined broadly enough to include people who are not physicians — gutting women’s health protections.

Where this would put Idaho

Idaho joins other states with commonsense early pregnancy limits. Prop 1 would align us with states that allow abortion to viability — or have no statutory gestational limit at all.

You can believe these decisions are personal — and still believe there should be commonsense limits.
